Fawley Maintenance Apprenticeship Opportunities

Situated on the western side of Southampton Water, Fawley is one of the largest oil refining and chemical manufacturing complexes in Europe. Here we produce oil products for Esso and ExxonMobil. These heat our homes, cool our food, propel our planes and power our cars. Some even make up the roads they drive along. Essentially, we deliver products that the country uses every day.

ExxonMobil Fawley Refinery currently has 43 apprentices in the four disciplines over the three years.

Our apprenticeships

Installing. Repairing. Testing. Building. Solving. Developing. Creating. Learning. You'll do it all here. Whichever area you choose for your apprenticeship - Instrument, Electrical, Machinery or Metal Trades - you'll gain skills you can use for your entire career - and all over the world.

Machinery

With the entire site being an intricate mass of valves, towers, exchanges and pipes, you'll enjoy the challenges that'll enhance your practical skills.

Becoming a Machinery Apprentice will see you work in our workshops and out on site. You'll install pumps, compressors, turbines, and large rotary fans as well as machine components. And as well as building a foundation in traditional engineering, you'll use cutting-edge technology to embrace new, innovative ways of working.

Control

Do you have a logical mind? Do you enjoy solving problems? If the answer is ‘yes’, then a Control Apprenticeship is for you!

As a Control Apprentice your training will cover electrical and instrument work.

  • Electrical

Power is the key to everything here. Without it, we couldn't do what we do. And as we use as much electricity as the whole of Southampton, we have our own power plant.

An Electrical Apprentice will develop skills that range from working with low voltage alarm systems right up to 11,000 volt motors. You'll gain knowledge of substations, plant areas, switch gears and all the ins and outs of alarm and lighting circuits. All in all, you'll gain fundamental skills for life in an area that's fundamental to our business.

  • Instrument

Every process in the site is operated and controlled by computer systems, electronics and pneumatic instruments. These instruments control flow, pressure levels and temperature. Some even take care of our on-stream analysers and emergency shut-down systems. This is a vital area for the Refinery. And a great area in which to learn.

As an Instrument Apprentice, you'll repair and maintain the equipment the keeps us working. You'll look after the Process and Manufacturing Units so our finished products continue to be safe, profitable and to the correct specification.

Metal Trades

This is the area where you can get stuck in to some hand-on work. Here you'll learn the trade of pipefitting or boiler making. You'll learn to solve problems, fulfil you practical potential and watch your work come to life. And you'll do all this while ensuring everything - from each nut and bolt on our towers to pipe work - remains robust, safe and operational.

Become a Metal Trace Technician and you'll learn a wide array of skills. You'll fabricate components in different metals from scratch, construct pipe-work systems and repair structures with state-of-the-art technology. You'll also learn how to work up drawings and plans, weld, rig and sling in all the crafts above. All in all, you'll help maintain the core of our operation and become a master craftsman.
