Refinery’s Knock-out Gift

Fawley (17 August 2007) -- A boxing club is looking forward to the installation of a new floor at their club in Lymington, following a grant of £500.

The Lawrence Boxing Club in the town’s Marsh Lane has received the money from Esso and ExxonMobil Chemical at Fawley in recognition of the time and effort one employee has put into volunteering over a ten year period.

The grant has been donated under a special scheme designed to recognise the efforts of ExxonMobil employees and their families who contribute their time, talent and energy to schools, charities and non-profit making organisations. The scheme not only helps local organisations, but also improves the links between ExxonMobil and the local community.

The grant applicant was Cliff Kent who is a process leader at the Fawley refinery. Cliff said: “The whole idea of the club is that it gives young people somewhere to go and helps keep them out of trouble. They can channel their aggression into a bag instead of each other and it instils some discipline in them.

“I joined the club as a boxer at the age of 10 years. Many years later I took my own son down, and then I found myself on the committee. Now I help out with anything that needs doing. I organise dinner shows and drive to matches if necessary.”

The ExxonMobil Volunteer Involvement Programme at Fawley, together with its sister scheme for school governors, has so far contributed more than £300,000 to local community projects since it was started four years ago.
