Fawley (June 26, 2006) -- A group of Sea Scouts have been thrown a lifeline
which will enable them to continue their full range of outdoor activities,
despite changes in legislation.
The 9th Lymington Sea Scouts
have taken delivery of a new trailer which will transport their camping
equipment and luggage, bought with a donation from Esso and ExxonMobil
Chemical at Fawley.
The group were faced with the possibility
of having to cancel many of their usual outdoor activities because they were
unable to continue transporting equipment such as tents, cooking equipment and
luggage in the back of vehicles because of new safety rules.
The £1,000 grant has been donated under a special scheme designed to recognise
the efforts of ExxonMobil employees and their families who contribute their
time, talent and energy to schools, charities and non-profit making
organisations. The scheme not only helps local organisations, but also
improves the links between ExxonMobil and the local community.
The 9th Lymington Sea Scouts cater for youngsters between the ages of six and
eighteen and are based in King’s Saltern Road in Lymington.
Mike Torrens, a measurement engineer at Fawley, who was the recipient of the
grant for the Scout Group, said: “Sea Scouts is about having fun and the
chance to learn sailing, kayaking and power boating as well as traditional
skills. It also enables youngsters to develop their teamwork and social skills
at the same time. The organisation gives them the chance to have a go at a
wide range of new activities which wouldn’t otherwise be available to them.”
Anne Pike is the Cub Leader at the group and wife of Ian Pike, an instrument
technician at Esso. She said: “The leaders as well as the youngsters get a
great deal out of Scouting, but like many groups we are desperately short of
leaders. If anyone in the community would like to get involved with the group
then I urge them to get in touch on 01590 676929.”
The
ExxonMobil Volunteer Involvement Programme has so far contributed more than
£110,000 to the New Forest community, since it was started three years ago.
