Macmillan Cancer Support received a cheque for £1,000 from ExxonMobil’s safety conscious office staff who donated their quarterly safety award to the charity. The award was granted as a result of the staff meeting safety targets in the first quarter of 2008.
Katie Smart, fundraising manager for Macmillan, said: "We are extremely grateful to the staff at ExxonMobil for the generous donation. The money will be used in our Grampian Appeal, which aims to increase the number of cancer patients who access welfare benefits. It will also go a long way in funding a new Clinical Psychologist who will provide emotional support for the people of Grampian that require complex cancer-specific support."
ExxonMobil created a new committee in September 2007 to maintain safety standards within its Aberdeen office. The Aberdeen Safety, Health, Environment and Security (ASHES) committee aims to develop a safe working environment for everyone in the office.
Katrina Ingram from the committee said: "The goal was to increase awareness and encourage staff to take responsibility for their own health, security and safety in the workplace, and hopefully change their behaviour so that accidents are prevented. We have representatives on each level of the building - keeping safety as a high profile and assisting management to maintain a safe working environment."
Staff are asked to nominate four charities to receive the quarterly safety award bonuses at the start of each year. "Macmillan was a favourite amongst the staff, and the three other charities selected will benefit later in the year should targets be met," added Katrina.
