Responsible Care®

Responsible Care® is the chemical industry’s global voluntary initiative under which companies, through their national associations, work together to continually improve their health, safety and environmental performance, and to communicate with stakeholders about their products and processes.

The Responsible Care ethic helps our industry operate safely and with due care for future generations, and was commended by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) as making a significant contribution to sustainable development at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002. As a global initiative by members of the chemical industry, Responsible Care is currently practiced in more than 50 countries that share a common commitment to advancing the safe and secure management of chemical products and processes. Specific Responsible Care practices may vary from country to country as they are affected by each country’s laws and national industry association.

ExxonMobil Chemical adheres to the guiding principles and codes of management practices of Responsible Care. For some 20 years, ExxonMobil Chemical has participated in our industry's Responsible Care initiative. During that time, the dedication of our employees and contractors has helped ExxonMobil Chemical become a leader in Responsible Care.

Responsible Care is an integral part of the way we operate. And, while we take pride in what we have accomplished, we remain committed to improving our performance and enhancing the vision of Responsible Care.

Role of OIMS and Responsible Care

ExxonMobil's commitment to Responsible Care is embodied in our Operations Integrity Management System (OIMS) and is embedded in the way we do business. And, it exemplifies our steadfast commitment to safety, security, health and the environment (SSH&E). Within OIMS are systems that provide the strategic direction for meeting our SSH&E and Responsible Care commitments.

Each of our systems is linked to the applicable Responsible Care management system, which allows personnel responsible for the implementation and continuous improvement of requirements to steward results appropriately.
