Fife plant gets prestigious green credentials

The ecological standards at Fife Ethylene Plant (FEP) have gained it international accolades from the US Wildlife Habitat Council.

FEP received the Corporate Lands for Learning and Wildlife at Work environmental certifications as well as the Rookie Of The Year Corporate Lands for Learning award at the Council’s International Conservation Awards.

This is the first time any ExxonMobil site has been nominated for these awards – and also the first time the Council has recognised any site outside the US.

The Council praised FEP’s hands-on initiatives to engage the local community, calling the employees’ efforts “truly exceptional” in its report.

FEP has a history of focusing on environmental education schemes: in 1997, it built an onsite wildlife pond that continues to attract around 1,000 student visitors a year.

And in 2006, it created a five-year plan to build onsite wildlife habitats and to educate students on how to conserve and increase the number of species of trees and plants.

The plant’s environmental co-ordinator attributed the success of the projects to collaborative working with local schools and organisations to achieve challenging goals, the commitment shown by staff, and the effort put in by young volunteers.
